Taking the Icelandic Kaldidalur route through Hveravellir from North to South - Day 6 & 7

The Road to Hveravellir

We deciced to take the Kaldidalur route through the Iceland Interior as our friend, Michal, had better experience passing through this road than our failed interior passage the day before. River crossings weren’t a problem as almost all of the rivers had proper bridges over them and the road was much more developed.

Oasis in the Highlands

We stayed overnight in Hveravellir which had a chalet, rooms for rent, a campsite and a hot springs and geyser sanctuary located in between two glaciers.

The water from the geysers are funneled directly to this hot spring tub where you can adjust the temperature to your liking. We were hoping to catch the Northern Lights while we were enjoying the hot springs but unfortunately the clouds held a different plan.

Regardless, this felt like a once in a lifetime experience bathing in the geothermal hot tub watching the sunset over glaciers.

Not surprisingly this wound up being our coldest night yet.

In Iceland you learn to really appreciate mornings with no rain.

Gýgjarfoss

Gýgjarfoss is a waterfall in the Jökulfall glacier river, which originates at the glacier Hofsjökull. The waterfall is about 5 meters high and 20 meters wide
